In a mad dance,
She leaps and twirls
From foothold to foothold,
From task to task:
Speed and continuity
Defying gravity,
Defying mind.
A sudden wall,
An enforced pause –
A simple change
(The grace to sit)
As dramatic as a spell:
Turned to stone or
Glued in place
While the will to dance whirls
A handspan past her fingertips.

Like a young child surrounded by brightly wrapped presents,
Visual promises of future glory, an excitement
Heightened by greed’s imagination –
A dilemma of hopes, of dreams –
When opening one means turning your back
On all those delicious possibilities

Art with a spirit and a soul that
No factory line can even
Dream to achieve, yet those factory and
Mill-made pieces undermine and diminish
All the effort, vision, and
Diligence poured into each piece – due to
Everyone’s unrealistic expectations of price.

Helping with a smile, a laugh,
Greeting each newcomer,
And passing from one conversation

The heartbeat of the gathering,
Like a watchful fire tender,
Nursing the warmth to fire.
