No Happiness, Please

Served with happiness?
Oh, no thank you.
No happiness for me.
It’s not that I don’t like it – no.
See, I have an allergy.
Even the slightest little drop
Is a positive guarantee
Of feeling awful afterwards, so, please,
No happiness for me.
Could you have it taken out?
Perhaps “served pensively”?
No, no, that simply will not work –
It’s just as bad with glee.
Moderation? Yes, I’ve tried before.
No, abstinence is key.
I’d rather feel a little down
Than endure that misery
(And though I’ve heard it often said
There’s rarely company).
No. No, if that’s served with happiness,
I’ll simply stick with tea.

A New Goal

A new goal, I hope unsolicited,
For people I’ve recently visited.
The ambition goes something this way:
That their happiness when I arrive
Be bigger and less contrived
Than their joy when I go away.
