Old Expectations

A once-orderly canal:
Directing and controlling,
Employing the power
And might of the waters.
Now abandoned, unkempt
But still visible, remembered,
Becomes more hazardous
Than an always-wild river.
Old expecations defied
With sudden currents
And hidden hazards.
