Not Your Usual NaNoWriMo Challenge

If any of you poets are feeling left out with National Novel Writing Month starting, join the First Annual twytte NaNoWriMoChallenge on Words & Deeds! It starts today, and there is really only 1 trick to it: write for an hour every day for the rest of the month.

For those of you who know the story of how twytte started this may sound similar, but unlike that experiment, you don’t have to write and publish something everyday. You just have to write.

Notice that I said, “write,” not “write a novel” (although you’re welcome to). Poems count – whether you’re working on a book of poems or simply writing several (or perfecting one, something I should do more often). Blog articles, short stories, movie scripts, plays: I do not prejudice against the writing format. Pick a project and write.

And share. I’d love to hear about what you’re writing. 🙂

A Glorious Sight

As beautiful the world,
As glorious its sights:
Trees, animals, people,
Buildings, cities, lights –
As wonderful as all that is
All that I wish to see
Is the inside of my eyelids
And sweet and pleasant dreams.

Not a Sign: Happy Halloween!

Built a year ago,
It stands, fresh and bright:
No crackled paint,
No broken panes –
Not a flaw in sight.
The floors are too well-made to
Creak,
The wiring, too good to
Flicker,
And the furnace kicks on instantly
To fight off the sudden
Chills.
There’s not a sign,
Not a sound,
No hint of what’s in store:
Like rot lurking behind the bark,
Or death, beneath the floor.

Ink & Paper

Like a fly trapped in amber
She’s caught in its pages:
Mere ink and paper –
Its words are her cage.

The Paths

From each step,
A million paths,
A million choices
Spring

Hand over your eyes,
Turn 60 degrees and
Point wherever you will –
Toss a coin, leap, or
Stumble off:
The paths multiply
Still.

Of Projects & Schedules

Pieces of inspiration,
Ready and eager for a start,
Outnumbering their creator and
Jockeying for a start, a sliver of an
Ever-shifting schedule that simply
Cannot make room or time –
That is – unless another piece of work
Stops, shares, or subsides.

This poem is, unfortunately, too true. I have lists upon lists of projects that I would like to work on, and there simply are not enough hours in the day to get to all of them. Even on a rotating schedule (that I may or may not have tried to plot out).

Also unfortunately, some of the projects are more necessary than others (that dang dollar sign problem), so to make time for the ones that are needed, I have reduced my posting schedule for twytte to 3 days a week plus the novel updates, which I will try to keep to once a week – preferably more consistently than I have managed recently (I am hoping that the reduced number of posts will help me actually meet that goal.).

Anyway, for the foreseeable future, I will be updating twytte with freshly-written prose or poetry on MWF plus the two novel updates (I haven’t decided on a firm day for those yet). If there is anything you would like to see more of (or less of), please contact me – I would love to hear from you.

Finally, and as always, thanks for reading!

Speed On

The red light cannot stop you,
But metal and glass can.
Speed on if you truly wish to learn
The fragility of man.

Like Magic

Darting through the air,
Nimble fingers flash and flick
Through dancing fire.

The Track

On again, off again,
Side, on, and back –
Lord, it’s a struggle
To keep me on track.

Trade-off

Enduring numbness
Overwhelmed by heavy fog:
A weighty trade-off
