Sticking with My New Year’s Resolutions

duct tape sticking with my new year's resolutions

Yeah. Like that.

I’m trying. Really. I knew from the start that my New Year’s resolutions weren’t going to be easy to keep, and I am happy (kind of…?) to say that I was right. But I’m not giving up. I’m sticking with my New Year’s resolutions – for at least another month.

*sigh*

I’ve made a little progress since my last update (very little). No, I did. I did some writing ahead, and I got enough sleep (some days). As far as the office… well… I used the desk…?

Oh, and I updated the novels! I know that’s not one of my resolutions, but it’s still exciting. And I’m planning to continue to update them on the same schedule (each novel every other week) until I feel comfortable adding more to my plate. As far as the resolutions go, however, I’ve been treading water. Or maybe floating. My only real progress has been planning (and dreaming).

That’s going to change this week! (Optimism is everything!) Seriously, though, I’ve just completed a major waste of time (hooray for educational hoops! :-/ ), so time-wise, I’m going to have more to spend on these resolutions.

Through the end of the month, that is.

Yep. Next month, I’m supposed to be starting a second job. Scratch that. I will be starting a second job (Remember what I said about optimism.). That means my time for writing is liable to get stretched even thinner (*gulp*).

I’m not sure how that’s going to work out yet. What I do know is that if I’m going to get the office set up, I need to do it now – by the end of this month at the latest – before I start the second job. So if I’m sticking with my New Year’s resolutions (and I’m trying to), I’m going to have to get my butt in gear and get the office done.

Can I get some happy thoughts? I think I’m gonna need the help!

A Desk Has Fallen from the Sky!

Really! A desk has fallen from the sky and alighted in my “office”! (Now, to fix the roof!)

Ok. Technically, that may be a slight hyperbole (probably a good thing). The desk was already in my office. It didn’t fall – it emerged (Nope. Still scary imagery.). Let’s say that it was discovered/found/unburied. Think of my office as an archaeological dig of boxes packed with the intention of moving which never happened.

*sigh*

The point is that I have a desk. Well, part of a desk. Enough for a laptop and drink. What more does  writer need?

Time. And money. And sleep. Lots of sleep.

Just kidding. Kind of. (*sobs*) That said, since my brain is obviously running on fumes (and where does one get a refill at these prices?), I am going to tentatively promise a novel update for tomorrow. I will even be rearranging my work schedule to try to guarantee it. And by posting this, I will be leashed to the collar of duty and unable to give in to laziness, procrastination, or exhaustion!

*cough* Right.

So… novel update tomorrow maybe probably kind of….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Office Update: What I Should Do vs. What I Want to Do

scarecrow both what i should do what i want to do

“That’s the trouble. I can’t make up my mind.” — Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz

So… apparently I really stink at estimating how long something will take me to do. Either that, or I’m horrible at recognizing my own limitations as far as energy and time (maybe both… probably both). Whatever the reason, I’m finding that my New Year’s resolutions are taking more time than I expected, which means I’m torn between what I should do and what I want to do.

That said, I’m very close to having a working office.

Now, before you get excited, let me clarify: my office is not close to being done. There’s a ton of moving, building, painting, sanding, staining, and cleaning before I get to that point. That said, however, I am close to having enough of it done that I can have a dedicated writing space.

In other words, I’m almost where I can clear off space on the desk for my laptop and have room to sit in front of it.

It sounds so much less impressive put that way. It’s true (how depressing is that?), but it really doesn’t reflect all the work that has gone into getting it that far. Moving furniture from room to room, juggling things around to get them out of the way until the furniture is in place, finding places for it afterwards – it’s not rocket science, but it does take a good amount of time.

Which leads me to the question: will I do what I should do or what I want to do?

What I Should Do

What I should do if I’m serious about completing my New Year’s resolutions is to continue to put off writing updates for Deathwalker and Wind Town until I get the office completely finished. I mean, if you look at it logically, that’s what makes the most sense, right? From a time management perspective?

If I focus on the office with what spare time I have, the office will be finished sooner. That’s pretty clear. Which should help me get back to a regular posting schedule (Oh, if only the world worked like it does in theory!)

What I Want to Do

What I want to do is try to update at least one of the novels this weekend. I think that’s why a lot of people read, and I don’t want to leave people hanging for any longer than necessary. (I’m assuming you don’t like being left hanging because I don’t. So if I’m wrong, let me know. I’ll stop worrying about it.)

On the other hand, I don’t want to start up again too soon and have to start skipping updates again. I feel like an extra week or two of the same break is better than constantly interrupting. Then, again, I don’t know. What do you think?

What I Will Do (Probably)

EM: [Wailing] I don’t know!

Sorry. (I’m such a drama queen!) Seriously, though, I’m going to try to do both. (Because I’m crazy. Duh!)

I’m going to work on the office, and if I feel like I make enough headway, I’m going to work on an update for the novels. That seems fair to me. Unless someone wants to suggest a better plan… anyone? Anyone at all?

My New Year’s Resolutions Have a Catch 22

Remember my 3 goals for the year, “3 New Year’s Resolutions That Aren’t Going to Be Easy“? Well, it turns out I may have understated the case. So far, my New Year’s resolutions have a catch 22 that’s got me in a kind of loop – when I start doing better at one, I start doing worse at another.

For example, making progress on 1 and/or 2 (setting up a writing space and writing ahead, respectively) usually makes me fail at 3 (getting enough sleep). Succeeding at 3, requires skipping work on 1 and 2 (for the most part), and that’s mainly what’s been happening (not good).

So what’s the plan?

Well, it occurred to me that setting up an office is more finite than the other two goals. Once it’s set up, it’s there, and keeping it is easier and less time-consuming (Obvious, maybe, but not when you’ve been losing sleep…). So if I push and get the office done, A. I’ll finish that goal for the most part (reducing my workload – yay!), and B. having a dedicated writing space will make the second goal (you know, the writing part) easier.

Win-win, right?

Eh…mostly. The one downside is that dedicating my energy to making that writing space is taking energy away from my writing. That means that Deathwalker and Wind Town posts will resume once the office is set up. But don’t panic! I’m hoping to have it done by the end of next week at the latest.

Then, I’m going to catch up on a sleep for a day or two (believe me, the writing will be better if I do), and then, I will start working on novel posts again.

Thanks in advance for your patience!

A Resolution to Do Better

Both twytte and Words & Deeds went through a lot of changes last year. One that I’m not proud of is that I haven’t been reliable about posting on schedule, especially with Wind Town and Deathwalker. Although I can’t promise that I will do better (I know enough about my upcoming schedule to know I might not be able to keep that promise), I am going to do my best to keep to the posting schedule.

To learn more about my strategy for dealing with this, you can read “3 New Year’s Resolutions That Aren’t Going to Be Easy.” The gist of the article is that I have plans to get more organized, which, in theory, should help me write more regularly and with fewer last-minute posts.

Let’s hope that, this time, reality and theory align.

A vow,
I cannot make.
A promise,
I cannot give –
Except to do my best
To try
So long as I shall
Live.

Happy New Year, everyone! Wish me luck!

Do You Feel Plucky? Happy Thanksgiving from twytte.com!

happy thanksgiving from twytte.com do you feel plucky?

If you asked me where this idea came from, I don’t know that I could answer (other than, “My brain.”). The original Dirty Harry quote would actually make more sense (in a twisted, ironic way) – after all, Thanksgiving is a time for feeling lucky and giving thanks for that luck.

Logical thought processes aside, here’s Dirty Turkey, come to wish you a happy Thanksgiving! I wish you all a safe, happy holiday!

One Problem? No Problem!

Hi, everyone!

I had a trip this morning, but since I expected to be back by mid-afternoon, I figured I’d have plenty of time for a Deathwalker post. Yeah, no.

The drive there went fine. The planned event went fine.

One problem. When leaving the parking lot (at noon) to get lunch, we found that my back tire was flat. And from the brief drive around the lot, it had come off the rim.

No problem. Sure, we’ll have a slight delay, but I have AAA. It’ll be fine. They send a truck to get the spare on or (I thought) tow us to a local shop for a new tire.

One problem. Being Sunday, a lot of shops are closed.

No problem. We spent some of the hour wait scrounging on my phone for repair shops that would still be open. There are a couple not too far out, so we’d be good to go as soon as the tow truck showed up.

One problem. It wasn’t a tow truck. It was a pickup with supplies to put on my spare tire.

No problem. The spare tire looks pretty good. It should get us to the mechanic.

One problem. The spare won’t come off. Ever seen how a spare’s attached underneath a car? There’s a cable that’s tightened to hold it up there, and when you want it down, you loosen the cable. Well, the cable came down to dangle beneath the car, but the spare didn’t move.

No problem. The AAA service guy jacked the car up and pulled the spare off sans some rust (what was presumably holding it in place). He checked it, inflated it, and lowered the car to remove the other tire and put on the spare one.

One problem. It’s really cold out, and there are people getting seriously chilled in the wind and snow because the back of the car is open.

No problem. I have blankets in the back, so they bundle up.

One problem. Instead of turning, the second lug nut and a bit of the stud snapped off. But he sprayed on some lubricant and got the next one off.  And snapped the next one off… he didn’t want to risk trying any more.

No problem. He’ll call a tow truck, and they’ll take us to the mechanics.

One problem. It’ll be another 1-1.5 hour wait plus the time to fix the tire (and replace the lug nuts). And when I call the mechanic they say they’ll take us to, I get voice mail. Google says they’re closed.

No problem. I’ll call AAA back and have them tow us all the way home. Why waste the time waiting for the fix now?

One problem. Their tow trucks can only take 2 passengers. We had 4. And it’s out of my tow range. And the tow truck will still be 1-1.5 hours.

No problem. We checked, and Enterprise is open. We’ll call and get a rental car delivered. And my car can get towed home.

One problem. The Enterprise within range to deliver to us is not open on Sunday.

No problem. We’ll go ahead and tow to a nearby mechanic we found, and a wonderful, generous person will give the other 2 passengers a ride there (Thank you, wonderfully generous person!).

One problem. The mechanics close at 6, and it won’t be done til around 7 (are you keeping track of when we started?).

No. Problem. The mechanics will stay late to get it done (wonderful guys, all!).

One problem. They don’t have the studs or the lug nuts. And a lot of the shops are closed.

No problem. There’s a couple of stores open.

One problem. The computer says they only have one.

No… problem. The mechanic calls a few. One thinks he has 2. No, 1. No, 2.

One problem. You know what? His computer’s doing funny things.

No problem? He’ll check in the back and send over the 2 he thinks he has. You guys can go eat (finally!), and we’ll call you if there’s an issue. We walk to Panera (which was close – yay!) and got lunch/dinner (it’s now 4ish). We get food and warmth (double yay!).

One problem. I get a call from the mechanic. The studs and lug nuts they sent over are the wrong ones, and they won’t work.

No problem. They ordered some from another store. They’re on their way, and the mechanic was able to get some of the work done while waiting for them.

One problem. The mechanics finished the car at about 6:35 (already dark), and we still had a 2+ hour drive home…

NO PROBLEM!!!

And that’s why there’s no Deathwalker update tonight. I’ll try to do 2 this week (or a longer one) to make up for it. Thanks for your patience and good night!

Not Your Usual NaNoWriMo Challenge

If any of you poets are feeling left out with National Novel Writing Month starting, join the First Annual twytte NaNoWriMoChallenge on Words & Deeds! It starts today, and there is really only 1 trick to it: write for an hour every day for the rest of the month.

For those of you who know the story of how twytte started this may sound similar, but unlike that experiment, you don’t have to write and publish something everyday. You just have to write.

Notice that I said, “write,” not “write a novel” (although you’re welcome to). Poems count – whether you’re working on a book of poems or simply writing several (or perfecting one, something I should do more often). Blog articles, short stories, movie scripts, plays: I do not prejudice against the writing format. Pick a project and write.

And share. I’d love to hear about what you’re writing. 🙂

Of Projects & Schedules

Pieces of inspiration,
Ready and eager for a start,
Outnumbering their creator and
Jockeying for a start, a sliver of an
Ever-shifting schedule that simply
Cannot make room or time –
That is – unless another piece of work
Stops, shares, or subsides.

This poem is, unfortunately, too true. I have lists upon lists of projects that I would like to work on, and there simply are not enough hours in the day to get to all of them. Even on a rotating schedule (that I may or may not have tried to plot out).

Also unfortunately, some of the projects are more necessary than others (that dang dollar sign problem), so to make time for the ones that are needed, I have reduced my posting schedule for twytte to 3 days a week plus the novel updates, which I will try to keep to once a week – preferably more consistently than I have managed recently (I am hoping that the reduced number of posts will help me actually meet that goal.).

Anyway, for the foreseeable future, I will be updating twytte with freshly-written prose or poetry on MWF plus the two novel updates (I haven’t decided on a firm day for those yet). If there is anything you would like to see more of (or less of), please contact me – I would love to hear from you.

Finally, and as always, thanks for reading!

A Common Conundrum

It is a task that I enjoy,
An action worth repeating,
But if I start the blogs again,
I’ll have less time for reading!

It’s not a very good excuse, but there you go. That’s why I’m late getting started again (1 reason). Whenever I get out of the habit of doing something, there’s always something else lurking in the wings, ready to jump out and take its place. In this case, reading and other chores have done a good job of it.

But that’s over now (well, as over as it gets). Although I haven’t decided on a new experiment, I’m going to start posting again and see what happens. Expect poetry at the very least. And as soon as I get caught up on worldbuilding and plotting, Deathwalker and Wind Town will update, too.

TTFN,
Em T. Wytte
